Pdf Summary
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has released a 5-year periodic training requirement for medical examiners (MEs) who are either past due or currently due. Due to delays, MEs past due for training have until December 31, 2022, to complete the training or risk removal from the National Registry. MEs due in the future will receive the training when they reach the 4-year anniversary of their certification and must complete it within 5 years.

There is also a 10-year periodic training and testing requirement. MEs will receive training from private sector organizations and upload their training proof to the National Registry. They will then be eligible to take the 10-year certification test. MEs past the 9-year timeframe will not face consequences for not completing the training and passing the test within 10 years. The 10-year training and testing function will be available from January 1, 2023. MEs will receive email notifications and have extra time based on their certification expiration date to complete the training and testing.

MEs whose certification expires in 2023 have a full year to complete the 10-year training and pass the certification test. They need to schedule training, complete it, upload their training proof, and schedule the certification test before their certification expires. MEs whose certification expires in 2024 or later will be notified by FMCSA after their 9-year anniversary to complete the training and testing within the given timeframe.

Failure to complete the 10-year training and certification test by December 31, 2023, will result in removal from the National Registry for noncompliance. MEs are encouraged to take advantage of the extended timeframe by starting training and testing on January 1, 2023. For more information, MEs can contact the National Registry Helpdesk.
