Pdf Summary
The Medical Review Board (MRB) of the US Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) discussed psychiatric disorders and commercial motor vehicle (CMV) driver safety. Research showed inconclusive results regarding crash risks for individuals with certain disorders, but suggested higher risks for those taking benzodiazepines and with specific personality traits. The MRB recommended additional evaluation for those with certain psychiatric disorders and restrictions for those taking psychiatric medications. Concerns were raised about neuropsychological tests and qualifications of mental health professionals. The MRB recommended expanding the scope of professionals performing evaluations. Other topics discussed included excessive daytime sleepiness, musculoskeletal disorders, and the implications of implantable devices on CMV driving. Overall, further research, evaluation, and consideration of drivers' functional abilities were deemed necessary.
