Pdf Summary
The Medical Review Board (MRB) of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) held a meeting in September 2017. The MRB reviewed and streamlined the Medical Examiner’s Handbook, making recommendations to the Agency on its revision. The committee discussed the confusion over using the terms best practices, standards, and recommendations interchangeably. They also discussed the formatting and accuracy of the handbook and the need to provide criteria for non-medical examiners. The MRB developed a list of recommendations to be submitted to the Agency by the end of 2017. They also reviewed the Agency’s seizure standard for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers with epilepsy or other conditions likely to cause loss of consciousness. The committee suggested having a panel of neurologists review the cases and determine the risk to the driver. The MRB also discussed the process for moving forward with the review of the seizure standard. The meeting was adjourned and a follow-up meeting to complete the review of the Medical Examiners Handbook was proposed. Overall, the MRB addressed issues related to the Medical Examiner’s Handbook and the seizure standard for CMV drivers with epilepsy or similar conditions.
