Pdf Summary
A study conducted in US adolescents investigated the association between polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and allergy. PFASs are artificial compounds widely used in various applications. The study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2006, which included laboratory data files on PFAS levels and information on current allergic symptoms and allergen sensitization. Multivariate regression models revealed that PFAS was positively associated with current allergic symptoms, and the association remained significant after adjusting for other variables. PFAS levels were divided into tertiles, and adolescents in the highest tertile had a significantly higher risk of current allergic symptoms compared to those in the lowest tertile. The most consistent association was observed between PFOS, a type of PFAS, and hay fever, allergy, and rhinitis. However, there was no significant association between PFAS and allergen sensitization. These findings suggest that PFASs may be associated with an increased incidence of current allergic symptoms in US adolescents. Further prospective studies are needed to provide more evidence on the relationship between PFAS exposure and allergy risk in adolescents.
