Pdf Summary
Presenteeism, the phenomenon where employees are at work but not fully engaged due to job stress, is a significant problem in the workplace. This study focused on validating a measure of presenteeism resulting from job stress, called the Job Stress-Related Presenteeism Scale (JSRPS). The study found support for a reliable 6-item, 2-factor model of the JSRPS, with factors labeled unproductivity and procrastination. The JSRPS showed associations with higher levels of psychological distress, workplace harassment, and turnover intentions, as well as lower levels of job satisfaction and work engagement. The scale also had stronger associations with psychological distress and workplace harassment compared to a widely-used measure of sickness presenteeism. These findings suggest that the JSRPS provides a valid measure of presenteeism resulting from job stress. The study highlights the importance of addressing job stress-related presenteeism, as it can significantly impact employee well-being and productivity. Organizations should consider measures to reduce job stress and create healthier work environments to mitigate the negative effects of presenteeism. Further research is needed to explore potential organizational factors and individual differences that contribute to job stress-related presenteeism.
