Pdf Summary
A study conducted in Brazil aimed to quantify the relationship between productivity loss (PL) and healthcare costs among adults with cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and assess whether habitual physical activity (HPA) affects this relationship. The sample consisted of 278 adults, including retired individuals, active workers, and unemployed individuals. The results showed that retired individuals due to disability had higher healthcare costs than those who retired at the normal retirement age. Among active workers, those who reported presenteeism and absenteeism due to CVDs had higher direct healthcare costs than those who reported other reasons. Additionally, there was a positive correlation between indirect costs related to absenteeism and direct healthcare costs. However, HPA had a positive effect on this relationship, with each increase in the score of HPA resulting in annual savings of US$53.00. The study highlights the financial impact of CVDs on individuals and society, with healthcare costs projected to reach US$1.1 trillion in the United States by 2035. It also emphasizes the importance of HPA in reducing healthcare costs, particularly among individuals with CVDs. The findings suggest that promoting regular physical activity can mitigate direct and indirect costs associated with CVDs and improve overall health outcomes.
