Pdf Summary
Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhalation of silica dust, primarily occurring in occupational settings. This study aimed to investigate potential biomarkers for diagnosing and monitoring silicosis. The study included 14 workers with silicosis and 7 healthy controls. Serum levels of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and various hematological and biochemical parameters were measured.

The results showed that patients with silicosis had significantly higher levels of PGE2, erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and hematocrit compared to the control group. PGE2, hemoglobin, and erythrocyte count were effective in distinguishing silicosis cases from healthy controls. The researchers concluded that PGE2 may serve as an additional diagnostic biomarker for silicosis, while hematological parameters such as erythrocytes, hemoglobin, and hematocrit may be prognostic biomarkers.

It is worth noting that PGE2 has both pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory effects, depending on the specific context and receptor types. Further research is needed to clarify the role of PGE2 as an early biomarker for silicosis. The study also highlighted the importance of using protective equipment in workplaces to prevent silica exposure and the need for legal, educational, and preventive measures in developing countries where silica-related diseases are prevalent.

The limitations of the study included a small sample size and the lack of continuous monitoring of biomarker concentrations over time. Future research should explore other potential biomarkers and functional polymorphisms in silicosis patients, and focus on early detection of the disease.
