Pdf Summary
A study investigated the joint associations of physical inactivity and insomnia symptoms with productivity in an Australian population-based cohort. The study used data from the 2013 and 2014 waves of the household income and labor dynamics in Australia survey. The study assessed the associations between presenteeism (reduced work performance) and absenteeism (sick leave) and four mutually exclusive groups: "active without insomnia," "active with insomnia," "inactive without insomnia," and "inactive with insomnia."

The results showed that participants in the "inactive with insomnia" group had a greater incidence of presenteeism and absenteeism compared to those in the "active without insomnia" group. Participants in the "active with insomnia" and "inactive with insomnia" groups had greater odds of presenteeism, while only the "inactive with insomnia" group had a greater incidence of absenteeism.

The findings suggest that improving physical activity levels and insomnia symptoms concurrently may improve productivity by reducing presenteeism and sick leave. The study highlights the importance of considering physical activity and sleep factors jointly and targeting both insomnia symptoms and physical inactivity to improve productivity in the workplace.
