Related presumptive conditions discussed were chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and irritable bowel syndrome.<br /><br />The presenters reviewed possible biological mechanisms, including neuroinflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, autonomic dysfunction, small fiber neuropathy, dysbiosis, and altered gut-brain signaling, while noting that no single cause has been proven. Treatment is symptom-based and can usually be managed in primary care with specialty support. Recommended approaches include building a therapeutic alliance, using cognitive behavioral therapy, sleep support, physical activity tailored to tolerance, mindfulness, and symptom-specific medications such as SNRIs, pregabalin, TCAs, or rifaximin when appropriate.<br /><br />They also explained the VA Gulf War Registry, which collects exposure and health information for eligible veterans and is separate from disability compensation exams. Finally, they discussed the PACT Act and VA presumptive service connection for eligible Gulf War veterans.
