This study aimed to investigate the effects of job demands on presenteeism among dependent self-employment (DSE) workers in Korea, with a focus on the mediation of musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs) and the moderation of job resources. The researchers analyzed data from the fifth Korean Working Conditions Survey and found that MSCs mediate the relationship between job demands and presenteeism among DSE workers. Specifically, workers exposed to high job demands, such as long working hours and physical exertion, experienced higher levels of MSCs, which in turn increased their likelihood of engaging in presenteeism. <br /><br />Job resources, specifically job control, were found to moderate the relationship between MSCs and presenteeism. When job control was high, the positive relationship between MSCs and presenteeism was weakened. This suggests that having greater control over one's work can mitigate the negative impact of MSCs on presenteeism. However, job resources did not moderate the indirect effect of job demands on presenteeism through MSCs, meaning that job resource levels did not affect the mediation process.<br /><br />The findings of this study highlight the importance of addressing MSCs and enhancing job resources for DSE workers in order to minimize the negative effects of job demands on presenteeism. Strategies to improve the working environment and reduce MSCs should be considered. Job resources, particularly job control, should also be strengthened to provide workers with greater autonomy and control over their work. <br /><br />It should be noted that this study had some limitations, including the use of cross-sectional data and a single question to measure presenteeism. Future research should include longitudinal data and explore the impact of presenteeism on work performance. In addition, further analysis should be conducted to examine the specific occupational groups within the DSE workforce.
