Exposure assessment is a core competency in occupational and environmental medicine (OEM), underpinning clinical decision-making, surveillance programs, regulatory compliance, and workplace health interventions. This 60-minute recorded session will introduce the principles and methods of exposure assessment to a multidisciplinary audience of OEM practitioners and trainees. The session may accommodate learners with varying backgrounds in industrial hygiene, toxicology, and regulatory health. The presentation will begin by establishing the relevance of exposure assessment to OEM practice, particularly in regards to medical surveillance procedures. Participants will be introduced to environmental sampling techniques (e.g., personal air sampling, area monitoring), biological monitoring (e.g., urinary biomarkers), and the interpretation of occupational exposure limits (e.g., OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs, NIOSH RELs). By the end of this session, participants will be equipped with a foundational understanding of exposure assessment principles and the tools necessary to interpret exposure data for individual patients, employee populations, and workplace environments.

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Explain the role of exposure assessment in guiding medical surveillance procedures within occupational and environmental medicine practice.
  2. Describe common environmental and biological monitoring techniques used in exposure assessment, including personal air sampling, area monitoring, and biomarker analysis.
  3. Interpret occupational exposure limits such as OSHA PELs, ACGIH TLVs, and NIOSH RELs, and apply them to the evaluation of workplace exposure data.
The course provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to compression neuropathies for the non-OEM specialist or new entrant.
