Course Content

ACOEM’s Essentials of Occupational Medicine program will be comprised of 15 sections and provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to the clinical, technical, and professional concepts of the field for the non-specialist or new entrant.

This bundle includes three courses on OEM Worker Well-Being:

  1. Alcohol and Drug Testing 
  2. Alcohol and Drugs in Society and the Workplace
  3. Marijuana in the Workplace
  4. MRO Function and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation

Alcohol and Drug Testing
This course reviews the standards of practice regarding workplace drug and alcohol testing from collection to laboratory testing. The types of workplace testing are discussed along with the importance of maintenance of a chain of custody. Laboratory processes, including validity testing are discussed.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  • Recite the seven basic types of workplace drug testing from the reasoning perspective.
  • Discuss the parameters of the chain of custody processes in drug and alcohol testing
  • Articulate the laboratory specimen validation steps that are used in urine drug testing.
  • Delineate the differences between positive, negative, and non-negative drug test results.

Alcohol and Drugs in Society and the Workplace
This course provides a background of alcohol and drug use in society with a focus on workplace demographics. Statistical information regarding groups of concern are discussed. The origin of drug and alcohol testing programs is reviewed, along with the goals of said programs.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  • Explain the historical data on drug and alcohol use in the United States by age and geographical demographics
  • Describe the parameters that led to the US Opioid Epidemic
  • Explain the evolution of employer-based drug and alcohol programs

Marijuana in the Workplace
This course investigates the issue of THC use in the workplace, focusing upon fitness for duty and the ongoing issues with state recreational and medical use of the substance in the face of worker and workplace protection as well as the overarching public safety concerns.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  • Describe the potential impacts of cannabis on individual health and workplace health and safety
  • Recognize cannabis-related impairment and intervene to support health and safety in the workplace and the health of the involved individual
  • Describe legal and regulatory policies at state and national level that shape management of cannabis in the workplace
  • Develop and implement workplace policies related to cannabis that support health and safety

MRO Function and Substance Abuse Rehabilitation
This course reviews the importance and need for a Medical Review Officer in the interpretation of laboratory drug test results as well as their overall gatekeeper function. The course also reviews the rationale and goals of rehabilitation for drug and alcohol misuse and the case for workplace recovery.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  • Learn how to recognize the various types of workplace hazard and factors that increase individual exposure risks.
  • Learn the role of industrial hygienist and the techniques used to monitor and abate workplace hazards.
  • Implement hazard control options utilizing the OSHA hierarchy of controls.
