ACOEM’s Essentials of Occupational Medicine program will be comprised of approximately 60 individual courses in 15 sections and provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to the clinical, technical, and professional concepts of the field for the non-specialist or new entrant.

The occupational injury incidence rate for knee disorders is only second to that for low back pain. Both knee and hip problems seem to affect younger workers (compared to other joints) which means that they have the potential to become more disabling. Hip pain is often difficult to diagnose, as referred pain from other structures is quite common.

This Musculoskeletal Hip and Knee course is designed to be an introduction to hip and knee disorders and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the knee and hip.
  2. Describe common knee and hip disorders.
  3. Conduct a focused knee and hip physical examination.
  4. Apply decision making regarding ordering of diagnostic testing.
  5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common knee and hip conditions.
  6. Manage return to work for patients with these conditions.
The course provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to musculoskeletal medicine for the non-OEM specialist or new entrant.
