ACOEM’s Essentials of Occupational Medicine program will be comprised of approximately 60 individual courses in 15 sections and provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to the clinical, technical, and professional concepts of the field for the non-specialist or new entrant.

Wrist and elbow disorders are commonly encountered by occupational medicine physicians. They can arise from acute trauma, or they can also be caused by repetitive strain (cumulative trauma). Conducting a good history and exam will lead to an accurate diagnosis. Conservative intervention is typically what yields the best long-term outcomes; however, some disorders may trigger the need for advanced diagnostics and surgical referral. Return to work management plays an important role in the treatment of these disorders.

This Musculoskeletal Wrist and Elbow course is designed to be an introduction to wrist and elbow disorders and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.

Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Describe the anatomy and physiology of the wrist and elbow.
  2. Describe common wrist and elbow disorders.
  3. Conduct a focused wrist and elbow physical examination.
  4. Apply decision-making regarding the ordering of diagnostic testing.
  5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common wrist and elbow conditions.
  6. Manage return to work for patients with wrist and elbow conditions.
The course provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to musculoskeletal medicine for the non-OEM specialist or new entrant.
