ACOEM’s Essentials of Occupational Medicine program will be comprised of approximately 60 individual courses in 15 sections and provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to the clinical, technical, and professional concepts of the field for the non-specialist or new entrant.

Low back pain continues to be the most common complaint presenting to any primary care physician, and certainly accounts for most workers compensation medical encounters by far. There is significant medical literature regarding low back pain and increasing information regarding neck pain. The key to taking care of these problems is properly identifying “red flags” with the focus of providing conservative intervention and reassurance to patients with all disorders that are not “red flags”.
This Musculoskeletal Spine course is designed to be an introduction to spine disorders and equip health professionals with an understanding of the job requirements and the functional abilities of patients with these problems.
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners should be able to:
1. Understand the anatomy and physiology of the spine.
2. Describe common spinal disorders.
3. Conduct a focused spinal physical examination.
4. Apply decision making regarding ordering of spinal diagnostic testing.
5. Demonstrate evidence-based treatments for common spinal conditions.
6. Manage return to work for patients with spinal conditions
The course provides an excellent and comprehensive introduction to musculoskeletal medicine for the non-OEM specialist or new entrant.
