This self-assessment review (SAR) reviews the breadth and depth of knowledge required to pass the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) examination in Occupational Medicine (OM), both the initial OM specialty section of the exam or the re-certification exam. Designed to present clinically-relevant SAR questions for the physician-learner in a “second-order” format that makes connections from toxicology or epidemiology into clinical OM (the current design of the Board exams), this program provides an opportunity to work through and effectively solve “real-world” case-based scenarios.
  • Musculoskeletal Disorders (Questions 1-25)
  • Skin Disorders (Questions 26-41)
  • Pulmonary & Respiratory Disorders (Questions 42-64)
  • Infectious Diseases (Questions 65-81)
  • Hepatic & Renal Disorders(Questions 82-85)
  • Occupational Toxicology (Questions 86-150)
  • Physical Hazards (Question 151-163)
  • Clinical Occupational Medicine (Questions 164-190)
  • Reproductive Disorders and Hazards(Questions 191-194)
  • Occupational Mental Health & Work Stress (Questions 195-198)
  • Transportation Medicine and Drug Testing (Questions 199-211)
  • Emergency Preparedness/Chemical & Biological Weapons/Travel Medicine (Questions 212-226)
  • Occupational Health Law and Regulation (Questions (Questions 227-240)
The learning activity consists of case-based multiple-choice questions on topics aligned with the ABPM study guide outline for the specialty examination in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, to allow the learner to self-assess mastery of the content corresponding to each topic area. Detailed explanations of the answers are made to the learner following completion of the entire activity; these will explain the basis for the answer, why the alternative answers are incorrect, and directing the learner to other sources for additional in-depth study. After every assessment attempt, the questions, answers, and feedback can be downloaded and saved as a PDF.

Estimated time to complete this educational activity: 35 hours
After completion of this activity, the physician will be able to:
• Outline in detail the content areas for study for preparation for the Occupational Medicine specialty certification (initial and recertification) examinations according to the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
• Perform a self-assessment of his or her level of knowledge within the scope of Occupational Medicine, identify strengths and weaknesses in knowledge and preparation and target further study in preparation for board certification or recertification examinations.
• Draw on the core disciplines of OM and public health (epidemiology, toxicology, and industrial hygiene) to inform knowledge of occupational diseases and disorders, and develop increasing expertise in applying these to worker and patient scenarios.
• Gain familiarity with answering second-order board-type questions that connect the disciplines of OM with clinical medicine in preparation for board certification/recertification examinations.

Learner Mode - you will be shown the correct answer and discussion immediately after your response to each question. NO CME is awarded for completing this course.
